about

Originally released on 07-07-97 Golden Section is one of the most eclectic System 7 albums.

In terms of rhythmic style each track is varied, but the album flows perfectly.

“Ring of Fire” is full on techno-trance – “Rite of Spring” is more tech-house with a beguiling echo guitar hook line – “Merkaba!” is psy-trance with a breakbeat element – and most of the other tracks are breakbeat based with “Exdreamist” and “Wave Bender” displaying strong drum & bass elements.

There is a strong Balinese/Indonesian influence on the album which also carries through to the artwork. “Sinom X Files” and “Borobudur” feature major vocal samples from music found on System 7’s frequent Indonesian visits and “Ring of Fire” is based around a tribal drum sample from the island of Timor.

One significant collaboration on Golden Section was with Talvin Singh, who's club Anokha System 7 visited regularily as a source of inspiration. Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy coupled Talvin’s electronic tabla magic with a major sample from the late great Don Cherry taken from a track Steve Hillage himself did with him back in the 70's on one of his rock solo albums. The result is a classic track that typifies the "psychedelic freestyle" approach of Golden Section. System 7 called the track "Don Corleone".

With its open minded take on multiple dance genres Golden Section represents a step forward for System 7’s musical aspirations

Golden Section was re-released in 2003 on System 7’s own A-Wave label.

Now on Bandcamp Golden Section is accompanied by 2 bonus remixes previously unavailable outside of Japan:- the single remix of Borobudur (with accompanying video) and the Troniq remix of Ring of Fire.
